If the files show in the desktop folder, I would try to delete them with an unlocker;

After that, there are a couple of XP 'tricks' to rebuild the desktop icon cache by resizing the desktop icons, then resizing them back. Another was to try to send the offending icon to a compressed folder, which throws an error but might clear the icon.
