No, I would not recommend Vista. But if you can wait a few month, in October this year Windows 7 will be released.

I am running the Pre-Release version of Windows 7 and it is excellent. No problems anywhere. It is much less bloated then Vista, is faster and I like it a lot. I think that if you buy a new machine now and it comes with Vista installed, you can switch for free to Windows 7 in October. I would ask.
