An external drive could be an external SATA or a USB drive or both (either). If you have it hooked up to the Sata, then be sure that it is plugged in before you put on the computer. There should be a transformer, plugged into the electricity, and the Sata connection to your computer.
If it isn't working, try the USB port instead of the Sata connection. You can plug that in or out while the desktop is up. It will tell you that it has detected new hardware and will install any missing USB drivers automatically. You can then find the drive letter in your MyComputer icon.
And if that is working and you actually really rather want the Sata connection, you have to get that fixed in the Bios or or an external Sata driver or something. Don't know where and how.
