Rod, I'm not sure about something ...which is why I didn't answer sooner.
Is this the only hard drive on your computer? Is it functioning at all, or is this a "dead PC" ?
I'm kind of at a loss, because this is way out of my league. Once a drive quits working (won't boot up), I don't know of any software fixes. Not that there aren't any -- I'm sure there are -- I just don't know what to recommend.
Have you played with any of the tools on the Nonag's Disk Managing page? Did any of them help? Have you tried putting the drive in a friend's computer to see if you could recover it?
With that said, if you're thinking about trying to clear the partitions (erase & reformat) -- and FIX your hard drive with a magnet -- you should forget it. ...Unless you want to do it for fun. Cool thought, but it's not gonna happen.
If your drive is working, even partially, and you're thinking about using a magnet to get rid of sensitive data (before you dispose of it), I would normally recommend something like Eraser.
If the hard drive is dead, a magnet will surely screw up the data in several clusters, but a good forensics guy could still recover most of it. If you want to be sure that no data survives, you're much better off "beating the crap out of it with a hammer."
