They stop talking because all they hear are echos. When everyone agrees, then no one is thinking.
Agreement is very satisfying, like chocolate cake every meal for a child. The first few meals are very exciting, but then the boredom sets in. You don't know why you are bored, I mean CHOCOLATE CAKE!!!, but too much of a good thing is simply not satisfying (although I hear beer is not subject to this effect) and people run off to find something even mildly stimulating. Hence facebook gives way to television.
Open Forums, even with the occasional troll (and sometimes because of the occasional troll) tend to be stimulating, and as an added bonus, educational. I learned more here, inspite of the insults, of which I freely passed around when prompted, while arguing with the denizens of this site, than ever I learned in School, or college.
New Ideas? This site was a goldmine. There are thousands of members, (some of which even agreed with me from time to time) with thousands of opinions, who could, if they were so inclined, opine away, with predictable results. The trolls would troll, insults and hurt feelings would abound, and much would be learned, much information would change hands, and one could say with certainty -It would not be boring.
Insults? Bah! Mere words by a stranger. And it is entertaining to give those words back, in spades. Even better -prove one's point, factually.
But it is soo much easier, less demanding on ones emotions to watch reruns of Matlock, or "Walker, Texas Ranger" (they do still show reruns, don't they?) than to venture forth, even in as safe an environ as a forum, and boldly state -"I think you are wrong!"
As a wise man once stated, "My enemies will believe the worst of me anyway, and my friends will know better.
Perhaps everyone found me overly opinionated, and left to avoid the annoyance.
Who knows -at least maybe they are somewhere safe and comfortable.
Hopefully, facebook will pan out for you, Jim.
