Thank you!  Very interesting, although not quite what I was looking for.  The author of that link & I share a common interest & fear.  I'm not so sure the  IPTC/XMP data will stick over the years, though.  That's why I'd prefer to add to the canvas of the photo rather than just edit the metadata.  Irfanview won't add to the canvas, but with the new paint tool bar, I can add text on to the photo & then 'save as'.  In some ways, this is even better because it allows me to more accurately tag who is who.  I'd still like the other ability, though.
