Hi Tom,
I'll check on this for you -- with regards to the right app on an Android phone.
In the meantime, if you or anyone else comes across something helpful, please post.
I do this all the time with my iPhone and iPad. A while back, I bought a 2TB portable drive (Seagate GoFlex Home) just for this purpose -- it is designed specifically for this, hooking directly to my router. Attached another portable drive to that one, and have both connected to my home wi-fi. With this, I have 5TB of streaming files, movies, music, data, etc. that I can access wherever I'm at, home or away. By attaching my printer too, this allows me to print wirelessly (again, home or away). Works very slick.
I really like these new smart devices, and also have a Samsung Galaxy S II (android) that I've been meaning to tie into this network. But, surprise, surprise, I've just been using that one for a phone, and haven't played with too many apps. Same thing with my Samsung tablet -- mostly use it with the built-in features.
P.S. Seagate makes a specific app for the drive I bought (GoFlex Home), for both Android and Apple devices. Maybe Verbatim, for your drive, has one too? But I know there are several remote desktop apps that allow you to access your home computer -- as if you are looking at the screen -- using apps like LogMeIn Ignition, Jump Desktop, and VNC Viewer. One app I love on my iPhone, for playing movies and songs when I'm home, is VLC Streamer.
P.P.S. You do realize that you can use apps/sites (i.e. Dropbox and Microsoft's SkyDrive) for a lot of things like this, right? They don't work for "streaming" quite so well, but you can store a lot on them.
NOTE: They carry drives like mine at Costco, and they're quite reasonable, especially with the pre-Christmas sales (instant rebates at Costco). I got mine, at this same time, a year ago, for about $120.
