Computer Hardware : Help for Cable Modem & Wireless Router

    Author: brianarobertson
Subject: Help for Cable Modem & Wireless Router
Posted: 03 July 2008 at 8:23pm

Hello Mike

Before replacing your trusty cable modem you should have some of your friends, family and neighbours who have this same service test the actual speed of the service. Regrettably some ISPs have been know to not consistently deliver the advertised speed to all their customers. They usually cover themselves by advertising "speeds up to ...". In most cases the lower speeds are legitimately caused by technical problems. If your line is only capable of supporting 10 or 12mb/s then you might as well stick with your current modem. If I understand your modem's manual correctly (I am not very good at understanding technobabble) http://www.toshiba.com/taisnpd/products/pcx1100u_cmmanual.pdf it would appear from the information on the 15th page (which is actually marked as page 13) your modem can support up to 12mb/s if pluged in to a USB port.

To test the line's speed, connect to these sites. Some sites may report slower speeds than others. This is normal and is usually caused by distance and line conditions.

Speakeasy
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Speedtest
http://speedtest.net/

Toast
http://performance.toast.net/default.asp?allservers=1&checkid=

WUGNET
http://www.wugnet.com/myspeed/speedtest.asp

Edited by brianarobertson - Today at 8:25pm

What does a badly run psychiatric hospital in Brooklyn have to do with "America." I find anti-American sentiment at least as tiresome as the "I'm a patriot" crap.

This is sad and angering and there are other sad and angering stories everyday. Governments come and go and some of them do a bad job. Institutions come and go, and some of them do a bad job. People come and go, and some of them fail to take care of their brothers and sisters.

I don't think this is unique to those that live in the borders of the United States.

What is good, though still sad, is that this has a least caught people's attention.
I recently upgraded my service to 15mb/s and I think my present modem is limited to 10mb/s. I've had my old Toshiba for over 2 years with NO trouble, resets, etc. - it's really been perfect. I'm just worried that it may be old technology.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a really good quality cable modem?

I also want to move from a wired network to wireless. Most of the the better 802.11g routers are very stable and work just fine. I would like to upgrade to an 802.11n, dual band router (I think the 5ghz band will become the 802.11n standard).
Anyone have a recommendation for a solid, reliable, fast 802.11n dual band router?
I bought a DLink DIR-655 based on its high reviews. Well. . . . the darn thing just keeps re-setting every time a new wireless network either comes on or goes off line. I've tried everything, including disabling the UPnP on both the router and computer and nothing works.

Thanks!!

Mike
Rarely will 3 people in a room agree on what's funny. And even if two may laugh, the third is often slighted.

That leaves me kind of confused? Which "sacred cow" did I slaughter?

When you posted that lesbian wedding photo, you specifically directed it to me.

Just for you Robert!

To me, this seemed like a personal invitation for response. What was I to say? How did you expect me to react? Did you expect me to be shocked? In today's world, hardly anything is beyond shame. Was I supposed to go "postal", so you could ridicule my answer? Should I have opined on the medical and social dangers of homosex? Was I supposed to pull a "Jerry Falwell", and start quoting brimstone and hellfire scripture?

Humor is what I felt -- so a joke is what I posted (even if only slightly funny). Is it surprising that I find the whole GLBTQ movement hilarious? (GLBTQ = gay, lesbian, bi, tranny, questioning)

I EXPECT AN APOLOGY NOW TO ALL GREEKS.... But your anger is misplaced.

...anybody who went to a decent school and learned some basic classic history would know...

It's not right-wing fascists, the ignorant, or the uneducated (and certainly not me) that have rewritten your country's ancient history (or the perception thereof). It's the GLBTQ community which you need to address!

See sites like >> this one or this one

Wasn't it revealed in the latest "Alexander the Great" movie that he had queer tendencies? Hollywood is to blame for that twisted revelation -- it's not my fault. And if you take the time to google sites like Amazon.com, you'll see there are hundreds and hundreds of books that disgrace your country's fables, philosophy, heroes, and history -- and almost every other nation's too.

I'm not big into conspiracy theories. But for such a small group, their agenda for the last 30+ years has been masterfully orchestrated.

What am I supposed to be sorry for? ... laughing, instead of screaming? ... or crying?
.

Edited by Robert - 29 June 2008 at 12:19am
